Audience key words, definition and example

  • Target Audience- this is particular group that the certain type of media is aimed at, and advertises the media piece towards that certain audience. For example, a trailer for 'Home' will have sections of the film that a younger audience will enjoy and it states at the beginning of the trailer what age rating the film will be.
  • Audience Appeal- what elements of the media the audience will like. For example, if a magazine cover was to have a certain person, like Ryan Gosling, fans of Ryan Gosling will want to buy the magazine because they like Ryan Gosling and appeal to him.
  • Attract- This is what attracts the audience to a certain piece of media, what they like in that media. For example, when the audience likes a franchise, and they go see the latest film because they like the previous films and what to keep up to date.
  • Audience Postion- when the piece of media includes their point of view or their opinion in that piece of media. For example, daily mail, when they include the news that a lot of people have an opinion on and they enjoy reading it because of t is in that piece of media.
  • Respond- this is the different response from different audiences, PON, PIES. Some people might find a piece if media they understand but have no relation towards it, when others do relate to it. For example, 15-25 year olds like sun sex and suspicious parents and understand it, but people around 50 years old might understand it, but have no relation towards it. When younger people around 10 or 5 years old don't understand it at all.
  • Encode & Decode- when the audience looks at a media piece, and they look at the iconography and can guess what theme the media is, for example the Django Unchained film magazine, people will decode it and know it is a western film, it doesn't say it is a we tern film on it but because the audience can see the western hats, guns and clothing, the audience can decode it as a western film.

Media Report

Introduction
In this report I will be evaluating my pre-production, production, textual analysis and questionnaire. This will include the font size and colour, images and layout, language and conventions. In this task I have created 2 magazine covers, a double page spread and a textual analysis.

Questionnaire
Everyone who had answered my questionnaire are all 15-18 years old, this means that my target audience is more likely to be aimed at young adults around the age of 15-18. This is age is mostly students so the price of the magazine will have to match this as well because most students are under class and don't have much money so the magazine won't cost a lot as well. I will have to make my magazine cover and double spread suitable to people/students around that age and what they are interested in. 54% of the people who answered my questionnaire were male and 46% were female, this made the magazine appeal more to male than female because I would have a more accurate view on what to do for my magazine if it is aimed at males. If I publish the magazine and start to release it in shops, I will need to release other issues in certain time periods like monthly, weekly or yearly. 50% of the people who answered the questionnaire read a magazine once a month, 40% read it once a year and 10% don't read magazines. Using this information I know the best time to release the magazine is once a month because more people will read the magazine than any other time. If I release it to many times or not enough times then I could lose sales and less people will read the magazine. Also price of the magazine is also important because if it is too expensive then people won't buy it but if it is too cheap then the company won't make any profit from it. 55% would pay £0-£3 for a magazine, 45% would spend £4-£10. Using his information I would use around £2-£5 for each magazine, this is because if it is any cheaper than the business will lose profit, but if it cost more than a lot less people would buy the magazine.

Textual Analysis
For both of the pieces I created I established the theme of film magazine and Sci-fi, inspired by the different science fiction film magazines like TRON, or Dr Who. I used these techniques on my own work, using neon colours like bright blue.

Images/Layout
I decided to place the image in the middle to make it the main image, and attract the audiences' attention. I was inspired by the Empire magazines because all of their main images were placed centre of the cover and had cover lines on both sides, with the masthead at the top and the main headline at the bottom. For my first image, I used an upper mid shot of my artist pointing at the camera, showing the upper half of his body. This shows his confidence in a science fiction film. The connotations of his pose is saying he is ready, as well as wearing smart suit and jacket showing that he is willing to make an effort to look good or the film he is in is telling the audience what his characters is going to be like by just looking at his appearance. I used a bright picture of the girl for my 2nd photo, this is because it was meant to be a futuristic cover and the pale skin with very dark hair made the girl look more futuristic, as well as her having very bright blue eyes. This helped with the futuristic genre because it gives that feeling that it is from the future. For my double page spread I used a darker shade on the picture to give it a look as if it is behind the scenes and not actually part of the show, just behind it. I used close up on my second image for the cover, because it matches with the empire magazine and gives the face more detail and appreciation.

Font/Language
My first magazine cover had the same font as the empire masthead, this is because it is big and it shows the importance, making it easy for the audience to read it. The title was called Day of the Doctor, which is the film of Dr Who, I used this because the audience would recognise the title and fans of Dr Who would read it. This could also will be a backfire for me as well because people who don't like Dr Who will not read this because they don't want to read something they don't like. I used cover lines on the side to show the different articles within the magazine and show the audience what else is in the magazine, if they saw something on the magazine cover that they are interested on then they will want to read it to see what it is. I used fonts that relate to the article and genre of the magazine, this is because it flows well with the genre and it wouldn't look like it is clashing with the theme of the magazine. It has connotations of science fiction genre, for example for the main title looks futuristic instead of using a normal font and making it look like present day font. I used different fonts in my pre-production were called ‘Matt Smith Doctor Who’, this is because it is a font that was made for ‘Doctor Who’ and it made sense to use that for my pre-production. I also used other fonts called ‘FUTURE EARTH’ which is a font that gives the impression of Sci-Fi and futuristic and it made the ‘TRON’ magazine feel like it was made from the future and it had a very strong connection with technology.

Conventions
Instead of having a border around the double page spread, I decided to completely fill it with my original picture, and put text over it. This is because I didn't want any blank spaces on my double page spread, I was inspired by an Empire magazine double page spread. On my first cover, I used the colour red and orange in the background, this has the connotation of danger and anger, this could also mean that the magazine could be having adventures with Dr Who, or something interesting is going to happen. But for my second image I used a blue effect which has the connotations of sad and futuristic. This could show the audience that something has happened to affect the character, and it is set in the future with neon blue colours that look futuristic. I added a bar code on the near the bottom of the cover to show it is a magazine cover, and most magazine covers have the barcode on the front, but sometimes the back because they can't put it on the spine. All of my covers relate to the Empire magazine, this is because I am doing film magazines, and Empire magazines are the best magazine company to use as an inspiration for my magazines. I used a lot of their conventions in my work because they can get a lot of audiences' attention with their magazines and I want to do the same. The pre-production has different conventions in, that link with many different things to try and make the audience think when they buy the magazine or when they look at the front cover.

Productions

My productions was a double page spread with the directors from the Dr Who magazine. I got inspired with the general layout of the Empire magazines, and used it in my work, using the rule of thirds with the main image in the middle and cover lines on either side of it. I used a different colour scheme from both of my magazine covers and double page spread with different schemes for each one, although my 2nd cover is similar to my double page spread. I used a large, high quality image because needed only the upper half of it and to do that I had to zoom in on the picture. If my image wasn't large, high quality then the image would be blurring and pixelated, this will ruin my main image for the magazine cover. To draw the reader’s attention, I used capital letters for the title to catch their eyes when they are looking through the magazines, I also used a different colour that contrast with the main colour of the double page spread to also catch the reader’s attention and get more interested in the article. The title was "behind the TARDIS doors", I used this because it is a pun, because not a lot of people in the show knows what is behind the TARDIS doors except form the main characters and the audience, and they think it is just an ordinary police box. But no one has been behind and it will show the creators of Dr Who and what happens behind the scenes. In conclusion, the production is supposed to link with the pre-production, because it uses the magazine cover to help back up the double cover page. Overall I think that the production is successful to ‘Doctor Who’ fans but at the same time it could upset some fans of ‘Doctor Who’ as well, this is because if they wanted to hear about the TV show more or wanted to see pictures of the show they might be disappointed. The cover page only showed and talked about the director, but if really big fans of the show and they enjoy the directors work, they might be pleased with the double cover page and buy the magazine and want to read more.

examples for mock exam

Newspaper
This newspaper article is showing very young girls that are trying to be the best they can with their body, to win the award of Miss World. Even though no one wants them to, they feel themselves that they are expected to look the best and will do anything to try and be the best. The media makes them look like they do noting else but work there hardest to try and be the best, but they do it in the most unhealthy way. It shows a negative representation on young girls in the early teens to mid 20s, because it makes them look like they will go through anything to try and look good to win modelling awards.

Magazine Cover
On this magazine cover, it represents men aged around 40-50, to dress up smartly, and act sensible. It also says at the bottom the cover "This is him smiling (you wouldn't want to see him pissed!)", giving the reader an idea that he gets angry quick, or is angry a lot of the time. This could make a representation of men in their 40s get angry easily at things, like the football or their work and other things. Also he is wearing a very smart suit and jacket for the cover, making him look very smart, representing men to look smart because they all normally have jobs and have to look smart as well. stereotypically showing that men in their 40s dress smartly a lot to look make themselves look good around others in public, but are short tempered and when they get angry they can be almost explosive.

TV show

In this TV programme, it is about late teenage or young adults going on holiday without their parents and just their mates for the first time or somewhere far for the first time, like Spain. But the parents will use the show to see what their children have been up to on their holidays and see if they can be trusted on their own. When they are on holiday with their friends, the parents will think that the first thing they will do is party and get drunk and try to have sex with complete strangers. Most of their predictions are right and this will give the young adults a negative representation through media, because after watching this they will think that all they do when they have free time is binge drink, part and have sex. But rarely are the parents are wrong, their children will just have a normal holiday, they will drink but not too much, and will enjoy their holiday by relaxing or doing other activities. This can also give a negative representation on the parents because it might show through this episode that parents won't trust their children even though they are doing the right thing and could prevent them from enjoying themselves, being too 'clingy' and getting in the way.

captain america- texture analysis

Masthead
This time the masthead is white instead of red, this might be because the main colour in the background is red and it won't make the masthead stand out as much, and white contrast with the colour red. There is also another resin why the masthead is white, in the background is the American flag, and the main colours of the flag are white, red and blue. With the masthead being white it links with the American flag and has a meaning to it, as well as trying to catch the audiences' attention.

Cover Lines
These are use to attract other audience that might not like Captain America or Chris Evans and wish to read something else and not about that. They normally use puns or play on words like "the other gladiator" hinting to the film Gladiator, saying that both captain america and gladiator are very strong fighters. Also these cover lines are yellow that have nothing to do with the American flag, this could be showing that this is completely different to the main image which is Captain America.

Double Page Spread Plan

Double Page Spread
1st Double Page Spread
On page 102-103 of the empire magazine, May 2013. It has a double page spread of Robert Ocri and Alex Kurtzman who are writers and producers of popular films today. In the double page spread, they are the main image, one is on one side of the page and the other is on the other side of the page. Even though they take up a lot of room on the double page spread, there is still enough space either side of them for at least two columns of text depending on how much text there is or what font, font size it is. this is a good idea as well, because the image is takes up the whole double spread, but the rest of the image around the two people are blank and is appropriate for text to be there, its also very dark compered to other images and makes the spread dark as well (black and white), this could emphasise the power that these two have in making the movie.

I would use more text, two or more columns, this will help me give the audience more information. I might also use a different colour scheme as well, but I will keep the same design with one person on each page very close to the centre, leaving room for text each side. I might change the layout of the text as well, depending on what I am going to do for my photography. E.g. if my image was of Doctor Who, I could have the text in the shape of a sonic screwdriver, or if i was using a superhero as my main image the text could be in the shape of the ionic shape of that hero(bat).

2nd Double Page Spread
This double page spread is of the recent film 'Fury', which is a WWII setting and the main characters are part of a tank squad join through Germany. The image shows all of the main characters sitting onto of the tank, looking relaxed. They are all muddy and dirty, which shows they went through something already, haven't just came from a clean house. It also has as the main headline 'MEN OF STEEL' which is very similar to man of steel, the super man film which was also very popular. this could attract a wider audience and also it is a pun, because the tanks will be made from steel or other parts of metals, and they are the men of that tank. the text on the side is also got an old feeling to it because if the font and the colour as well, like 1940-50, which is where the WWII was, and has enough information about it. The text gives a brief explanation on the film and then shows quotes, from the film or interviews with the actors and the directors. It also has another picture from the film, showing all the main characters in a way, and is mainly about Brad Pitt. hey will want Brad Pitt to be the main subject in the image because he is a big actor and has a lot of fans compared to the other fans.

How my research has helped me with my pre-production

I used a webpage called Survey Monkey, to get results from different people that is able to access it. It is used for making surveys online, this will allow other people to do the surveys online and then send me information to me, so I can use that information and use it know what to do for my pre-production. For example, if I was thinking to do a magazine, I will need to know what type of magazine applies to certain ages, and why they buy magazines and what they do to impact the reader. Plus, because it is a survey, I can choose to either have it multiple choice or ask open questions to them. This is a very big advantage to me, because if it was to have just open questions the answers will be a different variety and too much information for me to do for my pre-production. But because I will use multiple choice question, they are limited to around 3-5 answers and it will be a lot easier for me to use this information to improve my pre-production. This website is also very useful for me, because if I was to want to see the results of the surveys, it is very easy to see them, plus it puts the multiple choice answers into graphs which will be much quicker to see the average or the most popular answer of the questions. So it would show the ages of the people who answered the questions and what theme of magazines they liked, how much they would buy them, how much they will spend. This gave me an excellent idea of what to do for my magazine, how I will aim it at, what price I will charge the customers to buy it and what it will contain (information, and what appeals to those answers of the questionnaire).

I also did around 4 texture analysis on other existing magazine covers that are very popular and lot of people like to read. This gave me a wider range of understanding what to do for producing a popular/successful magazine. I had to label and explain every little detail of the magazine, if I hadn't of done this then I might miss a vital part of the magazine for when I produce it. I now know what to do for different magazine covers, and tell who they are aimed at comparing the front covers of the magazines. If the front cover had guns or a lot of violence, it would genially be aimed at 16-30 year old males that enjoy to watch action films. But if another magazine was to have Cheryl Cole wearing a very glamorous dress, advertising new perfume, this will almost defiantly be aimed at young to middle aged women who wish to look like Cheryl Cole, or are a big fan of her. I learnt about what the main heading should look like depending on the magazine, and it is very important to show the main image and make it the most important feature of the magazine. The main image is the most important bit of the magazine cover because it shows what the magazine is going to be about, this is what I learnt about texture analysis.

Inception - Texture Analysis

Masthead
The masthead is very big and takes up lot of the front cover, but it is still blocked by the main image and the middle of it is blocked out by Leonard DiCaprio, this shows that even though it is the magazines main title, the image is more important and will make the magazine sell more. It is ionic colour of red because empire always uses the colour red for the masthead. it is in contrast of the main colour grey and makes it a lot easier for the viewer to read the masthead.

Cover Lines
The cover lines are like representing the film and reflect on it. The film is about the dreams and non reality world, and the cover lines look like it is deceiving reality and does't look real. The image is very simple but is exaggerated by the cover lines and without them it wouldn't look as good and wouldn't fit in the trend of inception, it would just look like a man dressed in a suit with a gun. the quotes are also using quite big film names to try and catch other viewers attention, like batman 3 and toy story 3. These are important because if the people don't like inception but are more interested in these movies then they will buy the magazines for those reasons. This is also known as plugs and give information the contents of the magazines.

Main Image
The main image is Leonardo DiCaprio wearing a smart suit and holding a gun, looking slightly off the camera but is centre of the cover. If this was just used and nothing else, no one would know what it is for, but because of the background of the bird's eye view of a big city, showing how high up he is (importance of him). This is important because without the background, you wouldn't know the reason why he is standing there, but with the background you know what he is doing and wy he is standing there in that pose. This is very simple pose but because of the editing and the gun in his hand it makes the image a lot more powerful and it makes Leonardo DiCaprio seem intimidating to others and someone you don't want to annoy.
