examples for mock exam

Newspaper
This newspaper article is showing very young girls that are trying to be the best they can with their body, to win the award of Miss World. Even though no one wants them to, they feel themselves that they are expected to look the best and will do anything to try and be the best. The media makes them look like they do noting else but work there hardest to try and be the best, but they do it in the most unhealthy way. It shows a negative representation on young girls in the early teens to mid 20s, because it makes them look like they will go through anything to try and look good to win modelling awards.

Magazine Cover
On this magazine cover, it represents men aged around 40-50, to dress up smartly, and act sensible. It also says at the bottom the cover "This is him smiling (you wouldn't want to see him pissed!)", giving the reader an idea that he gets angry quick, or is angry a lot of the time. This could make a representation of men in their 40s get angry easily at things, like the football or their work and other things. Also he is wearing a very smart suit and jacket for the cover, making him look very smart, representing men to look smart because they all normally have jobs and have to look smart as well. stereotypically showing that men in their 40s dress smartly a lot to look make themselves look good around others in public, but are short tempered and when they get angry they can be almost explosive.

TV show

In this TV programme, it is about late teenage or young adults going on holiday without their parents and just their mates for the first time or somewhere far for the first time, like Spain. But the parents will use the show to see what their children have been up to on their holidays and see if they can be trusted on their own. When they are on holiday with their friends, the parents will think that the first thing they will do is party and get drunk and try to have sex with complete strangers. Most of their predictions are right and this will give the young adults a negative representation through media, because after watching this they will think that all they do when they have free time is binge drink, part and have sex. But rarely are the parents are wrong, their children will just have a normal holiday, they will drink but not too much, and will enjoy their holiday by relaxing or doing other activities. This can also give a negative representation on the parents because it might show through this episode that parents won't trust their children even though they are doing the right thing and could prevent them from enjoying themselves, being too 'clingy' and getting in the way.

captain america- texture analysis

Masthead
This time the masthead is white instead of red, this might be because the main colour in the background is red and it won't make the masthead stand out as much, and white contrast with the colour red. There is also another resin why the masthead is white, in the background is the American flag, and the main colours of the flag are white, red and blue. With the masthead being white it links with the American flag and has a meaning to it, as well as trying to catch the audiences' attention.

Cover Lines
These are use to attract other audience that might not like Captain America or Chris Evans and wish to read something else and not about that. They normally use puns or play on words like "the other gladiator" hinting to the film Gladiator, saying that both captain america and gladiator are very strong fighters. Also these cover lines are yellow that have nothing to do with the American flag, this could be showing that this is completely different to the main image which is Captain America.

Double Page Spread Plan

Double Page Spread
1st Double Page Spread
On page 102-103 of the empire magazine, May 2013. It has a double page spread of Robert Ocri and Alex Kurtzman who are writers and producers of popular films today. In the double page spread, they are the main image, one is on one side of the page and the other is on the other side of the page. Even though they take up a lot of room on the double page spread, there is still enough space either side of them for at least two columns of text depending on how much text there is or what font, font size it is. this is a good idea as well, because the image is takes up the whole double spread, but the rest of the image around the two people are blank and is appropriate for text to be there, its also very dark compered to other images and makes the spread dark as well (black and white), this could emphasise the power that these two have in making the movie.

I would use more text, two or more columns, this will help me give the audience more information. I might also use a different colour scheme as well, but I will keep the same design with one person on each page very close to the centre, leaving room for text each side. I might change the layout of the text as well, depending on what I am going to do for my photography. E.g. if my image was of Doctor Who, I could have the text in the shape of a sonic screwdriver, or if i was using a superhero as my main image the text could be in the shape of the ionic shape of that hero(bat).

2nd Double Page Spread
This double page spread is of the recent film 'Fury', which is a WWII setting and the main characters are part of a tank squad join through Germany. The image shows all of the main characters sitting onto of the tank, looking relaxed. They are all muddy and dirty, which shows they went through something already, haven't just came from a clean house. It also has as the main headline 'MEN OF STEEL' which is very similar to man of steel, the super man film which was also very popular. this could attract a wider audience and also it is a pun, because the tanks will be made from steel or other parts of metals, and they are the men of that tank. the text on the side is also got an old feeling to it because if the font and the colour as well, like 1940-50, which is where the WWII was, and has enough information about it. The text gives a brief explanation on the film and then shows quotes, from the film or interviews with the actors and the directors. It also has another picture from the film, showing all the main characters in a way, and is mainly about Brad Pitt. hey will want Brad Pitt to be the main subject in the image because he is a big actor and has a lot of fans compared to the other fans.

How my research has helped me with my pre-production

I used a webpage called Survey Monkey, to get results from different people that is able to access it. It is used for making surveys online, this will allow other people to do the surveys online and then send me information to me, so I can use that information and use it know what to do for my pre-production. For example, if I was thinking to do a magazine, I will need to know what type of magazine applies to certain ages, and why they buy magazines and what they do to impact the reader. Plus, because it is a survey, I can choose to either have it multiple choice or ask open questions to them. This is a very big advantage to me, because if it was to have just open questions the answers will be a different variety and too much information for me to do for my pre-production. But because I will use multiple choice question, they are limited to around 3-5 answers and it will be a lot easier for me to use this information to improve my pre-production. This website is also very useful for me, because if I was to want to see the results of the surveys, it is very easy to see them, plus it puts the multiple choice answers into graphs which will be much quicker to see the average or the most popular answer of the questions. So it would show the ages of the people who answered the questions and what theme of magazines they liked, how much they would buy them, how much they will spend. This gave me an excellent idea of what to do for my magazine, how I will aim it at, what price I will charge the customers to buy it and what it will contain (information, and what appeals to those answers of the questionnaire).

I also did around 4 texture analysis on other existing magazine covers that are very popular and lot of people like to read. This gave me a wider range of understanding what to do for producing a popular/successful magazine. I had to label and explain every little detail of the magazine, if I hadn't of done this then I might miss a vital part of the magazine for when I produce it. I now know what to do for different magazine covers, and tell who they are aimed at comparing the front covers of the magazines. If the front cover had guns or a lot of violence, it would genially be aimed at 16-30 year old males that enjoy to watch action films. But if another magazine was to have Cheryl Cole wearing a very glamorous dress, advertising new perfume, this will almost defiantly be aimed at young to middle aged women who wish to look like Cheryl Cole, or are a big fan of her. I learnt about what the main heading should look like depending on the magazine, and it is very important to show the main image and make it the most important feature of the magazine. The main image is the most important bit of the magazine cover because it shows what the magazine is going to be about, this is what I learnt about texture analysis.

Inception - Texture Analysis

Masthead
The masthead is very big and takes up lot of the front cover, but it is still blocked by the main image and the middle of it is blocked out by Leonard DiCaprio, this shows that even though it is the magazines main title, the image is more important and will make the magazine sell more. It is ionic colour of red because empire always uses the colour red for the masthead. it is in contrast of the main colour grey and makes it a lot easier for the viewer to read the masthead.

Cover Lines
The cover lines are like representing the film and reflect on it. The film is about the dreams and non reality world, and the cover lines look like it is deceiving reality and does't look real. The image is very simple but is exaggerated by the cover lines and without them it wouldn't look as good and wouldn't fit in the trend of inception, it would just look like a man dressed in a suit with a gun. the quotes are also using quite big film names to try and catch other viewers attention, like batman 3 and toy story 3. These are important because if the people don't like inception but are more interested in these movies then they will buy the magazines for those reasons. This is also known as plugs and give information the contents of the magazines.

Main Image
The main image is Leonardo DiCaprio wearing a smart suit and holding a gun, looking slightly off the camera but is centre of the cover. If this was just used and nothing else, no one would know what it is for, but because of the background of the bird's eye view of a big city, showing how high up he is (importance of him). This is important because without the background, you wouldn't know the reason why he is standing there, but with the background you know what he is doing and wy he is standing there in that pose. This is very simple pose but because of the editing and the gun in his hand it makes the image a lot more powerful and it makes Leonardo DiCaprio seem intimidating to others and someone you don't want to annoy.

TRON- texture analysis

Masthead
The masthead is once again in red because it is the ionic colour scheme of the empire magazines and is the normal trend for it, as well as it stands out compared to the main colour in the background which is turquoise and blue. The masthead is red contrasting with the blue making it stand out and catch the viewers eyes reading the title and then the rest of the magazine.

Cover Lines
All over the magazine it says different oscar awards and famous films that have had great reviews. This is done to try and attract other audiences that are not interested in that certain film and want to know about more important information to them like the oscar awards and other films that might attract to them. They might also use this to try and promote this film as well, if they put oscar awards next to the film, then people might think that the oscar awards are on the same level as TRON or TRON is more important than the oscar awards, making them feel more like they need to read about this because this is the most important thing at this monte and everyone will be talking about it. This is also the same for the other big movies as well, because they are in smaller text, they are not that important as the main tim on the poster.

Main Image
The main image is of a women who's character we know called Quorra, we know this because at the bottom it has a quick description of it, it says Quorra : Program. This explain to us her name and that she is a program, this links to computers and suggest that she might be good at computing and this skill might link to the film. The actor is Olivia Wilde, she has a very pale look and looks like she is from a futuristic place, or a coded women in a game, but she is looking into the camera with a a seductive smirk, making the reader feel attracted to Olivia, they might want to read the magazine more because of this and they might be a fan of either the film TRON or they are a fan of the actor Olivia Wilde. They decided to do a close up on the actor instead of doing a long shot or mid shot, this shows the face in more detail and shows what they did to make the actor to look like a computerised woman.

Time front cover analysis

Time Magazine cover analysis
Age- 25-45
gender- Male
social economic group- Group B, C2, C1 and D

Age
A massive age gap of the audience who watch this, it is estimated at 25-45 maybe 50. on the media kit it had the Median of 48. It is shown in the front cover because their could be a lot of fans who might of liked Captain America  from a long time ago and wanted to watch it now. Also there could be the younger audience who would want to watch it now because it is a new film, but need to be  bit older because they might not want to read a magazine about it and just research it on the internet. it would normally be aimed at the older generation because it is more informative than just gossip and talks more about the film and Chris Evans than anything other interesting happening.

Gender
Although normally there is an equal split between this brand of magazine, this is more related towards male because it has an action, super hero film that appeals more to males. But also females could either like the film or like Chris Evans and would want to read the magazine because of this. This also for males as well, they might be a fan of the film and Chris Evans and only want to read it only to know about him.

Social Economic Group
The social economic group would normally be aimed at groups B, C2, C1 and D. This is because normally they would be very informative about the key subject, but instead the subject is based round a superhero movie, giving it a wider audience range. The higher class would be their normal customers/subscribers because they would probably read it for information and what is happening at that moment. The lower class would normally be buying a couple of copies a year because it appeals to them at that moment and catches their eye because they heard recently there was a Captain America film and they wanted to know about it.

Main Image
The main image is Chris Evans wearing half of a Captain America mask. It only show his face, one side is almost very neatly kept, clean shave and mask, then the other side is more stylish with a stubble and showing more of his face. This image is more appealed to men because it is almost showing how a man should look even though it is about the film, men would like to look like him more. It also could attract women as well though because women might be a fan of Chris Evans and like him a lot, so they buy the magazine. It doesn't show anyone of the actual clothes he is wearing but just his head, it is kept neatly and looks quite attractive, so the social group could be aimed at at around C2, C1 maybe a bit of B as well, because he is not looking scruffy or un-neat so it wouldn't really be aimed at anyone from under that social group.

Mast Head
the mast head is the big title at the top of the cover, it is in Times New Roman font to match with the the actual title which is 'TIMES'. This is coloured red, which could imply 2 different things, romance and as well it could represent danger and a warning. None of these actually represent this so it could mean something else as well, it might be red to try and catch a passing customer, they might think that it could be something dangerous, then they realise it was just a normal magazine. They then get involved and wan to buy it to keep reading.

Cover Lines
the cover lines in this article are different to most magazine cover lines. These cover lines have the same features of other cover lines, but there is not a lot of them. Most magazines have them all over the sides covering up most of the magazine, but this only has 1 and a small font underneath. It is white and is only covering up his neck and his chin (not the important bits of the main image), but says "Identity and the modern hero". This means that most masked heroes in films hide their identity by wearing a mask, not showing their identity, but this magazine is almost trying to tell young men not to hide themselves and be like a hero, showing the picture of Chris evens with a mask and without it. This will aim at mainly men but can also aim at women who feel insecure about themselves, and mainly the younger generation so could be aimed at 20-25. The groups is a bit bigger now because it implies to more people, Group D, C1, C2 and B as well.

George Ezra-Blame it on me analysis

Introduction
In the music video Blame It on Me by George Ezra they use lots of different techniques that by just looking at it seems like nothing, but looking deeper into it it shows a lot of different effects that you won't even notice first time you look at it.

Mise-En-Scene
It shows George Ezra walking down a street of Los Angeles, the street isn't very well kept and looks a bit rough. But he is walking very calmly down the street with no care even though he doesn't know what could happen to him, this shows that even though it is a rough street, there isn't much to worry about because he still seems to get through it all without any serious harm to him. Other reason why it shows that this is a rough area is the graffiti on the wall, showing that a lot of people commit crimes around that area and it is dangerous. Also another reason why this area shows it is dangerous and rough, is the child in the car. After he shoots George Ezra with the toy gun, the cars drives off, but he doesn't have his seatbelt on which shows he doesn't care much about the law and is safety, even though it is a small law, the area sill as little care of the law and is classed as rough. At the beginning of the video, there are a few birds in a form of an arrow flying across, this shows that it could be calm and relaxing, also shows where about it is. For example if it is a flock of seagulls then it could be near the sea, but if it was some pigeons it would be near the city or a larger town. towards to the end when he walking through the shoot out, he is walking on some sort of fluid that represents the yellow brick road the man talked about at the beginning, which shows that he has found what he is looking for, even though he went through so much to get to it, he finally made it.

Camera
Mostly through the video shows George Ezra at an eye line angle, this shows that he is normal, average and not really that interesting even though he is main person in the music video. As well as the eye line angle it is also doing backwards tracking on George. This shows that he is walking away from something or walking towards something, we don't know what he is walking towards or away which shows a sense of mystery. Plus this shows we are following him so we don't lose him in the streets and are always watching what he is doing. Also, they use some sideways tracking to show the area more and where he's walking. This also looks like someone else is following him and he is either in trouble or someone wants to try and help him. This depends on the theme, considering the theme looks like a comedy, someone could be trying to help him. If it was a horror, it could've been someone following him. Near to the end, the camera is a lot further away than before and makes George look a lot smaller than before, making him look vulnerable which he was when he was walking through a shoot out. It also gives us a better look at his surroundings and what he is actually walking through again.

Lighting
The lighting in the whole production was always high-key lighting, and never went that dark. This shows that normally that is supposed to be like a comedy or not be a thriller/horror. This means that the mood is good and almost cheerful, trying to make the person laugh at George Ezra. They might have also used high-key lighting to try and show the audience the location they are in, if it was too dark they might not know where they are. But because it is high-key lighting, they can see the Mise-en-scene, what is happening and the location. This might happen because it is telling us what is either going to happen or what has happened in the past.

Editing
They normally use jump cuts to change time and make the walk that he is doing seem a lot quicker than normal, this is to show that he has been walking for a very long time trying to search for what he is looking for, but because it was so long they had to shorten the length of it. Plus they have used shot-reverse-shot when George was looking at the girl, then the girl was looking at him and so on. Showing they are both defiantly looking at each other and it shows what sort of relationship they have or might have. They also use parallel editing from George singing the song walking down the same street, to George then doing the actions like getting hit by some rugby players, this shows the narrative of the song as well as showing us that it is George that is singing the song as well.

Sound
The sound in this music video is different to most music videos, it has the main song singing in the background which is non-diegetic to the narrative part of the music video, but is diegetic to the actual song part of the video. It also chooses to use some diegetic noises as well at some points, like the car crashing into George causing a skid noise as it turns. Another example would be the gun shots at the end of the video. But other sections of the video that might of contained loud noises weren't included like the car pulling off with the boy in the back seat. The reason why they have chosen these certain sounds is because it contains more action and with sound it makes it more exciting or shocking for the audience making them get more involved with the music video, enjoying it a lot more.
